A spicy vegetable relish often served with braai grilled meats in South Africa.

Ingredients

canned baked beans in tomato sauce410 g
large carrots, grated3 pieces
green bell pepper, finely diced1 pieces
large onion, finely chopped1 pieces
large ripe tomatoes, diced3 pieces
garlic cloves, minced3 pieces
fresh ginger, grated1 tbsp
vegetable oil3 tbsp
curry powder2 tsp
paprika1 tsp
fresh chillies, finely chopped2 pieces
salt1 tsp

Preparation

  1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan or pot over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and ginger and stir for 1 minute.
  2. Add the chillies, curry powder, and paprika. Stir for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the green pepper and grated carrots. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring regularly, until the carrots begin to soften.
  4. Add the diced tomatoes. Cook for 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes have broken down and the mixture is saucy.
  5. Stir in the baked beans. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 10 minutes until everything is cooked through and the flavours have combined. Season with salt to taste.
  6. Taste and adjust — chakalaka should be spicy, tangy from the tomatoes, and slightly sweet from the carrots and beans. Serve warm or at room temperature.
